How to turn your SIM into a Nano SIM at home for your iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is a very noticeable 18% slimmer than the 4S. In order to reduce thickness, Apple had to completely overhaul previously used technology – like replacing the 30-pin connector with the new Lightning connector – or further reduce size of existing components, something you'll notice when you realize that your shiny new iPhone doesn't have enough room for your standard SIM or Micro SIM card; the iPhone 5 uses an even smaller Nano SIM card.

Now, there are two ways of going about getting your Nano SIM card. The first thing to do is to visit your wireless network's local customer service center and get them to replace your current SIM with a Nano SIM, or you can follow the guide after the jump and turn your SIM into a Nano SIM at home.

20120921131825590

The guide is very simple and straightforward. You will require the following apparatus:

  • A printer
  • A4-sized page
  • Tape
  • Ruler and marker
  • Scissors
  • Sandpaper or file

When you are in possession of these items, you have my permission to slice (your SIM card).

Step 1: Print the PDF we've linked here at 100% scale on an A4 page.

How to cut Nano SIM

Step 2: Place your current SIM card (Mini or Micro) on the designated area. If you have a Mini SIM, place it on the second highlighted area. If you have Micro SIM, place it on the third and last.

Step 3: Firmly stick your SIM to the highlighted outline using a piece of tape. Be sure to align the edges properly.

20120921133818155

Step 4: Use a ruler + marker to accurately mark the five lines along which you have to cut.

Step 5: Cut it! Be very careful. Take things slowly. You may damage your card if this isn't done properly.

20120921133715119

Step 6: Smooth out the edges of your freshly-cut Nano SIM by using sandpaper or a file. Again, be very careful in this step as it may damage the SIM card's circuitry if you sand the SIM more than needed.

Voila! You now have a Nano SIM that should, technically, work with an iPhone 5.

This is, of course, not a completely foolproof method. There is a chance that you may permanently damage your SIM card, so proceed with extreme caution. If you don't have any backup SIM to use with your current phone, I would highly suggest going through the effort of visiting your local customer service center; it's better than being stuck without a phone. iTycoon4iDevices will not be held responsible if you damage your SIM card in the process of following this guide.

As I see it, the Nano SIM is the smallest SIM cards we will have for a while. There is virtually no area left on the SIM that isn't the contact area. The next generation of SIM cards – I'm betting they'll be called "pico SIM cards" – will have to reduce the contact area itself rather than cutting off the area around them.

iFixit has already nearly finished their teardown of the iPhone 5.

Only a few hours have passed since Apple's iPhone 5 launched in Australia and iFixit has already nearly finished their teardown of the iPhone 5.

The iDevice tear down experts have already declared the iPhone 5 much easier to take apart than the iPhone 4S.

"Compare this to the iPhone 4s, where it took 38 steps to isolate the display assembly, and this iPhone may be the most repairable iPhone we've seen in a while,"— iFixit.
The familiar pentalobe screws are still present, and all the expected fixins including a larger battery, A6 processor, Qualcom LTE chip are present. However, oddly enough Apple has changed their vibration motor from the "quieter and less annoying linear oscillating vibrator" to the old rotational with counterweight motor.

The iPhone 5 back case is also incredibly light. The aluminum back case with a number of components still attached to it only weighs slightly more than the glass back of the iPhone 4S. Impressive.

More when the tear down is complete.

I am really expecting a new iPod touch on 12th September 2012, what about you?

According to 9to5Mac, Apple may be releasing new iPods at next week's event alongside the new iPhone. Details on the changes coming in these new iPods are currently scarce, but 9to5Mac believe that there will be at least two new/updated iPod lines and possibly a third.

All these new lines will come in multiple colors, one of the lines will come in two size capacities, and the other two lines will come in a single storage capacity.

With the current iPod nanos and iPod shuffles both available in multiple colors (and with the nano currently available in two capacities and the shuffle in one), we think it is likely that new iPod nanos and iPod shuffles are launching next week.

However, it is possible that there is a third line as well (that, too, comes in multiple colors). With the iPod touch currently available in two colors and three capacities (black/white, 8GB, 32GB, 64GB), we don't believe the iPod touch is the third line that comes in multiple colors.

The site feels it will be the iPod nanos and iPod shuffles that get updated next week and believes that the third line may have to do with a recently rumored oblong shaped device. Although, this device was thought to be the new iPod nano, the site suggests it will be a separate device.

FunBoard Tweaking Enable You to Customize Home screen Animations

FunBoard is such a upcomin tweak that allows you to customize the Home screen icons, dock, and more. Check out how the animations appear on your home screen in the video:

While FunBoard does add a couple of original (to my knowledge) animations to the fray, it primarily features lot of the same ideas that we've seen from other tweaks.

Animation tweak is hot title on Cydia, and which Apple would not like to copy it and make it official in iOS. But they make the iOS devices look pretty more. FunBoard will be available on Cydia's BigBoss repo in the near future for $1.99.

Free iOS Apps To Wirelessly Share Files Between iOS devices

File sharing is not the strongest point of iOS, and Android users rarely lose any chance of showing off the convenience they have at their disposal, thanks to Bluetooth file transfer. At first glance, you might feel like Bluetooth or wireless file transfer is not something that you can have on an iPhone, but in fact, there are some really nice apps available in the App Store for exactly that purpose. All iOS devices come with Bluetooth support, and there are a few apps that let you use Bluetooth to share photos, contacts, music and other files between two iOS devices, and that, too, without the need of jailbreak, or even iTunes.

You might have come across one or two such apps for iOS, but here is a list of no less than 5 free apps that allow iOS users to transfer data between any iDevice(s) wirelessly, and with complete ease.

iShareFiles

Although the app is full of really annoying ads, iShareFiles just might be the most easy-to-use file transfer solution available for iOS. You only need this free app installed on both iOS devices, and you are good to go without having to sign up for an account or performing any configuration steps. Just fire up the app on both iDevices, and hit the big Bluetooth button located in the middle of the screen. iShareFiles will search for other devices running the app in your iPhone's vicinity, and once any such device is found, you are free to start sharing. The app lets its users transfer photos (both from the camera roll and by snapping one directly from your device's camera) and contacts. Although the files sent by other iShareFiles users will be received on your iPhone or iPod touch without asking for your permission, you do get the choice to preview the contact or image file before actually saving it. The preview screen has got a Save button in the top right corner, and until you hit that, the photo will remain only in the app and won’t go to the Photos library in your iDevice. Received images are stored in the camera roll, while the contact cards go to the stock Contacts app.

Bump

Bump is, by far, the most popular app when it comes to sharing data between two smartphones. Like some other apps in our list, Bump deals with photos and contacts, but undoubtedly has the most polished interface as compared to all of its competitors. Another thing that makes Bump unique is the fact that it is completely free of buttons, and the whole sharing process is based upon gestures. All you have to do is select the photos or contact information you want to transfer to another iPhone, and then bump your device with the other one, while both of them are running the app. Bump is also useful for transferring data to a computer, and it even has the option to let you share your own contact card with anyone quickly.

BumpBump
Use Bump™ to share contact information and photos by simply bumping two phones together. Just open Bump, hold your phones, and gently bump your hands together -- Bump will magically do all the rest.

SimpleDrop

In summary, the app is the most thorough and feature-rich option available if you are looking to transfer data between two iOS devices. It might take you some time to learn to use the app, but once you have done that, everything is sure to go smoothly. SimpleDrop uses Wi-Fi to let users share music, photos, videos, contacts and documents between two iOS devices devices, and from an iPhone to a computer. You just have to sign in on both devices using the same credentials, and you will be able to view the other person's data and receive whatever they choose to share with you. Despite all its awesomeness, SimpleDrop is a free app, and is certainly among the best of its kind.

SimpleDropSimpleDrop
You can share documents, contacts, photos and play media files via streaming on various devices (iPhone, iPad, PC, Digital Album) through the SimpleDrop service.

Kicksend

While apps like Bump might be really good for sharing a few photos, you need something like Kicksend if you are looking to transfer a lot of photos or videos from your iPhone in one go. Kicksend acts like an email service focused just on media sharing. Of course, it does not make use of your email ID, and you will have to create an app-specific account before you can start sending photos to your friends. There is no limit on the number of image files that can be shared via Kicksend, and you will be able to send as many files as you want in one go. Kicksend is not just a file sharing service, and doubles as a social network, too. The service allows its users to add their friends to mailing lists, and even has the option to leave comments on individual shares.

KicksendKicksend
Send & print tons of photos & videos from your iPhone to people you love using Kicksend. It's beautifully simple, 100% free, and fully private.

AirForShare

AirForShare is an app that can be used to transfer image and text files between iOS, Windows Phone, Android and desktop devices. The service hosts the images you want to share over a temporary server of sorts, and anyone with access to that server (that is, anyone on the same Wi-Fi network as you) can download the images and text hosted on it. So, you can use AirForShare as an effective method for quickly sharing images from your iPhone or iPad with other iOS devices near you. Keep in mind though, AirForShare is not recommended if you are looking for a secure method of image sharing.

AirForShareAirForShare
AirForShare helps you share text, links and files between devices instantly. Once uploaded, your text or file will be available for 30 minutes on any other device you use in your wi-fi network *

All the apps above have covered nearlly all the functionality for iOS to iOS file sharing, and all the five apps are available for free in the iOS App Store.
