Google Chrome lands No. 1 spot for free iOS apps

Google's Chrome browser for iOS is now No. 1 in the App Store for free apps.

The mobile browser went live for iPhone and iPad owners yesterday, and now it holds the top spot for both device categories. The app notably allows users to view open tabs, bookmarks, and other browser particulars running on other computers and devices. Users can even send pages from Chrome on a computer to their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with "one click and read them on the go, even if you're offline."

Chrome for iOS already touts 4.5-stars based on over 3,500 reviews as of press time. Despite the glowing accolades, some folks are noticing its lack of Apple-given attention:

Leave My Apps Alone

I don't imagine that I am the only person in the world who spends most of his day buried face first into an iPhone, iPad or MacBook. And in that respect, said devices become something I depend on and can't honestly get my day's social and professional work done without them. It sounds pretty weird to say out loud, but the three Apple products I use daily have almost become an extension of who I am and I therefore like them set up just right.

In most other walks other life, the old saying "familiarity breeds contempt" is very apt and usually applies, but when it comes to things like an iPhone or iPod touch, it is usually the opposite that applies with users liking their apps and home screen set up in a very specific fashion. As is usually the case, Cydia has a tweak that applies in this situation with the Leave My Apps Alone package not likely to win any awards for most inventive name of the year, but certainly likely to capture attention of some users thanks to its functionality.

The intended feature of the tweak isn't exactly mind-blowing and could have probably been thought out a little better to include some additional options, but when installed it basically locks the home screen from being able to delete or move applications when the device is in edit, or wiggle mode as some prefer to call it. Users can obviously still flick between home screen pages to activate and launch applications as well as edit the home screen to add Dashboard X widgets, but the option to delete apps is removed.

It might seem like it could provide a lot of benefit, but for those who like to use things like Gridlock or Iconoclasm to set up complex homes creen layouts with the help of user-interface themes would certainly find something like this useful, even as just a precaution. To make it more user-friendly, I would like to see the developer implement an activation toggle through passcode security to allow the owner to be able to make amendments without having to totally uninstall the tweak through Cydia.

Leave My Apps Alone is available as a free of charge download from the BigBoss repository with no specific iOS requirements

Powerguard Adds A Password Prompt To Prevent Your iDevice From Powering Off

Regardless of whether you happen to be an experienced iOS device owner who upgrades to the latest release religiously or are relatively new to the Apple device owning world, it should come as no surprise that an iPhone or iPod touch is an extremely powerful device that rivals anything on the market today. Although an out of the box iDevice experience is an extremely pleasurable one, when combined with a jailbreak, it is taken to a new level with new features and enhancements becoming available.

One of the latest tweaks to be made available to jailbroken users via the Cydia platform goes by the name of Powerguard and I would imagine that it will be particularly useful for quite a large set of users who are currently benefitting from being jailbroken. As is usually the case with Cydia-based packages, the name gives a few small clues to the functionality that is contained within, and in this instance, offering some additional security measures to the action of attempting to power down the device. In a stock installation of iOS, powering down the unit is a very simple process with the power button needing to be depressed for a few seconds before sliding the resulting slider to confirm the action.

When installed, Powerguard changes the whole scope of the powering down process and implements a security check to make sure that it is actually allowed. The check comes in the form of a simple password confirmation box that requires the correct password or code to be entered before the device will shut itself off. The developer of the tweak makes the argument that this is particularly useful for those who are prone to accidentally turning their iPhone or iPod touch off, although I can't see how that can happen given the native powering down procedure. With that said, there are a few instances when this could prove useful.

If the user is currently limited to a tethered jailbreak it could always be beneficial to restrict the ability to turn the device off due to the fact that a tethered boot would normally be required upon startup. It could also be worth using this package if, as a user, you are concerned about your expensive gadget getting lost or stolen as removing the ability to turn it off will also prevent the GPS signal from being cut. Whilst not the most professionally implemented, Powerguard does offer some a solution to real-world situations that iOS device owners can find themselves in. No additional home screen icons or installed, with options and admin features being available through the Settings app.

Powerguard is available as a $0.99 download from the BigBoss Repository with no specific iOS device requirements being.

iOS 6 Beta Baseband Updated for iPhone 4 [4.12.02], 4S [2.8.01] & 3GS [5.16.06]

Here's the updated baseband version for all iOS 6 supported iPhones:

  • iPhone 4  – 4.12.02
  • iPhone 4S – 2.8.01
  • iPhone 3GS – 5.16.06
  • iPhone 5 – ??

The biggest revision is the baseband for iPhone 4S which has been updated from the current version 2.0.12. This probably means the exploits used for Gevey Ultra S will be blocked permanently. We still have no idea what's the hardware going to be for iPhone 5, so at the moment there's no information on the baseband version.

If you don't have an official unlock, you should stay away from any beta software update because there's no method available to preserve your baseband or to unlock new baseband.

For iPhone 4 users (maybe iPhone 4S too), if you have either baseband 4.11.08 or 4.12.01 which can't be unlocked, you CAN actually test drive iOS 6 beta. Since Apple is still signing iOS 5.1.1, you can always downgrade the iOS and the baseband gets downgraded too.

SAM unlock method may work as long as SAM pref is fully supported on iOS 6; provided that Apple didn't setup a way of blocking this method. Since iOS 6 beta jailbreak is only available for developers, that means unlockers need to wait as well.

Foxconn’s Chairman Claims iPhone 5 Will Kick Galaxy S III’s Rear At Launch

According to several local reports, Foxconn's Terry Gou made some pretty bold statements at Hon Hai Precision's annual meeting of shareholders on Monday. While there are a few translations, all seem to claim Gou urged customers to wait for the iPhone 5, "saying that the new model will put Samsung's Galaxy III to shame." A report from Focus Taiwanquoted China Times:

Gou said he has made it a lifetime goal to defeat Samsung — "a company with a track record of snitching on its competitors."… He was referring to Samsung's action in 2010 of snitching on four Taiwanese companies in an investigation by the European Commission on price-fixing in the flat panel industry…Samsung was exempted from the investigation by serving as a "tainted witness." … Gou also urged consumers to wait for the launch of Apple's iPhone 5, saying that the new model will put Samsung's Galaxy III to shame.

Gou also apparently claimed that Foxconn's Sakai plant "has an exclusive agreement with Corning Inc., an American manufacturer of glass, on large panel supply," and his "competitors will not be able to secure any such material if they wished to." We are going to wait to see if Foxconn issues a statement regarding these quotes, because we know a couple of stories in recent months misquoted Gou…

"I respect the Japanese and especially like their execution and communication styles," Gou said, "Unlike the Koreans, they will not hit you from behind."

SIM Unlock Galaxy S III In Seconds

Although, when initially manufactured, smartphones are designed to work with a particular type of SIM, the carriers narrow things down by locking devices down to their particular network. The process of trying to unlock can be difficult indeed, and as such, consumers look to the expert developers and modders to offer a solution.

Picture the scene. You upgrade your device on one carrier, let's call them, for argument's sake, AB&B, but your daughter – who is far more technologically-orientated than yourself, wants your shiny new device, to which you begrudgingly oblige. Unfortunately, your daughter is contracted with another carrier – Dash – and of course, you both want the new device to work with her carrier. Herein lies the problem.

unnamed

You call up AB&B, requesting they unlock your device. You're contracted to make the payments anyhow, so you would think, perhaps, AB&B would happily unlock your device – even if a small fee is incurred. Unfortunately, that's not how things play out, and although some carriers and circumstances allow a carrier unlock to be achieved, chances are, you're going to be stuck with a locked device, which then becomes the clichéd expensive doorstop.

The developers, without whom, I don't know how we'd cope, come up with varied unlock solutions, and although a wait is often involved, there's invariably light at the end of the tunnel. For those rocking an i9300 strain of the Samsung Galaxy S III, you're among the luckier folk who can now unlock their device, and the clincher is, it gets as complicated as installing an .apk file from the Google Play Store.

unnamed

As you may expect, you will need to have a rooted device, and although precious date is backed up prior to the unlocking procedure, the auto-restore feature is not yet fully operational, thus the unlock solution is labeled as a beta at present.

Still, it works just nicely, and if you're rooted and raring to go, hit up the link below and you'll have your i9300 Galaxy S III unlocked in a matter of moments.

unnamed (1)

Note: Do not install on variations of the S III other than the I9300 model. It will not work.

Fix iPad Baseband 6.15.00 Not Downgraded to 5.13.04 for iPhone 3GS/3G

OK, so redsn0w was released yesterday that will downgrade iPad baseband 6.15.00 to 5.13.04 but it didn't work for some. Here's the fix which you can try.

I tried to downgrade it while the iPhone 3GS was running on iOS 5.1.1. When the process was completed, the phone booted up but it was still showing iPad baseband 6.15.00. I found a simple solution which hopefully would work for you as well.

Firstly, use  iPad Baseband Downgrade method I posted earlier. Once done, if you still have baseband 6.15.00, try the following:

1. Build custom iOS 4.1 either with redsn0w or sn0wbreeze. You can also download custom iOS 4.1 for 3GS or you can use any custom iOS 4.x foriPhone 3G since it doesn't require SHSH signing.

2. Put iPhone into pawn DFU either with iREB or redsn0w.

3. Launch iTunes and press Shift+Restore (Windows) or Option+Restore (Mac). Since Apple is still signing iOS 4.1 for iPhone 3GS, make sure your hosts file doesn't point to Cydia server (though it's OK if you have SHHS for iOS 4.1 saved there).

4. Wait until the restore is complete.

5. When your iPhone reboots, you should see your baseband is now downgraded to 5.13.04.

6. You can then build a new custom iOS 5.1.1 to preserve the baseband, restore it and then unlock with ultrasn0w 1.2.7.

Pretty strange but this would work for sure.

Post from my iPad 2

You can Now Downgrade Specifically from 06.15 to 05.13.04

The iPhone Dev Team is happy to announce a baseband downgrade option in redsn0w for those who are using the iPad's 06.15 baseband on the iPhone3G or iPhone3GS.

Typically you'd have the 06.15 baseband if you unlock with ultrasn0w but updated your iPhone baseband past 05.13.04.  With this new capability, you can now downgrade specifically from 06.15 to 05.13.04 (even if you never had 05.13.04 on that device before).  This gives you the best of both worlds: ultrasn0w compatibility and a normal iPhone baseband with full GPS and the ability to use stock IPSWs again.

Here are the steps:

  1. Use the "Extras->Select IPSW" button in redsn0w to tell it which firmware version you have installed (new-bootrom 3GS users can usually skip this step but it doesn't hurt for them to do it too).
  2. Do a controlled shutdown of your iPhone ("slide to power off").  This step is very important to avoid mount problems when the ramdisk is running!
  3. Go back to the first screen and click "Jailbreak".  Enable the "Downgrade from iPad baseband" checkbox, disable Cydia if you already have it installed, and click Next to proceed through the normal DFU ramdisk steps.

After the ramdisk gets launched and you see the Pwnapple running on your iPhone, you'll eventually get to the "Flashing Baseband" step.  THIS STEP TAKES A VERY LONG TIME to complete and there won't be any feedback while its running.  Please just let it be for the next 3-8 minutes!  When the ramdisk has done its job it will reboot the phone on its own.

For those who are wondering if you can update your 3G or 3GS to 06.15 solely for the purposes of downgrading to 05.13.04, the answer is "yes" for 3G owners, and "maybe" for 3GS owners.  The iPad baseband is not compatible with 3GS units manufactured week 34 of 2011 or later.  If you have an iPhone3GS and if digits 3-5 of its Serial Number are 134 or later (xx134…), then you should NOT try to install the 06.15 baseband on your 3GS!  It will brick your radio, preventing both the downgrade from working and normal iPhone software from using it as a phone!  Be warned!

Thanks very much to @dilbert4life for graciously loaning us his 3GS at 06.15 (we had no such devices because we always prevent BB updates!)

If you have any questions or comments, please use our comments section below!

Here are the download links.  Enjoy!

Update #1: If you're still using ultrasn0w after going down to 05.13.04, many people have reported that re-installing Mobile Substrate and/or ultrasn0w fixes crashes and "No Signal".

Recover Deleted Photos And Images From Memory Card On Your Android Phone

We can all empathize with the sinking feeling felt when something important is erroneously deleted from our smartphones, but instead of becoming lost for good, the DiskDigger team has created an Android app to help you recover those precious files you thought had disappeared into the Recycle Bin of no return.

DiskDigger is a household name already, and if you're a Windows user, you may already have been acquainted with the tool that spares your files from the hangman's noose at the eleventh hour. The tool carries all of its strengths through to Android, and if you've recently deleted a file and are having second thoughts, DiskDigger is arguably your best hope of a reprieve.

unnamed

Like the Windows iteration, it's absolutely free of charge, although does understandably require root access in order to work its magic. Currently in beta stage, it will recover recently deleted images with aplomb, and like any respectable app, it keeps its user interface as minimalistic as possible, as not to bamboozle those downloading it.

unnamed

Far from one-dimensional, it uses a variety of different techniques in order to achieve its goal. Of course, there are no guarantees, but having tested it ourselves, it performed flawlessly, and having encountered many similar apps in the past, DiskDigger has to be among the best. When you launch it, you've the option of sifting through each partition of your device's storage. All you need to do is select the one which contained those images before you opted to remove them, and tap Scan device. From then, you can also refine your search down to the specific file type, and those found will appear in the corresponding window on the left hand side of the UI.

can preview each file discovered, and simply hit Save, which will in turn present you the opportunity to restore the files to the location of your choosing. A Mail button is also included which lets you e-mail the images to an address of your choice, and although this no-frills app doesn't necessarily boast the various features offered by similar apps, it does a stellar job of what it proclaims to do.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod 4G On iOS 6 With RedSn0w

Just like at the at the wind-down of last year's WWDC, we're releasing a developer-only version of a redsn0w tethered jailbreak for app developers.

Supported Devices:
-iPod touch 4G
-iPhone3GS
-iPhone4 (GSM)
-iPhone4 (CDMA)

IMPORTANT WARNINGS:

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 6.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple's official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 6 jailbroken apps.

CYDIA WILL NOT BE INSTALLED because it just hasn't had time to be updated to the new SDK. The only access you'll get to the device is through SSH or afc2. If you don't know what either of those are, you shouldn't be using this developer version of redsn0w!

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE! You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past the activation screens. PLEASE DON'T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE! Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot's limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost. You will need to use redsn0w to "Just boot" button to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it's because you didn't boot tethered.

You must point redsn0w at your IPSW the first time you "Jailbreak" and "Just boot" tethered because that IPSW is only available to developers, and redsn0w can't automatically fetch the pieces it needs from it.  By the time you've done a "Just boot" tethered JB though, redsn0w has cached all the files it needs from the IPSW so you won't need to point redsn0w at it any longer.

iOS 6 Compatibility

As iOS 6 officially unveiled yesterday, we noted a few of the features—such as Siri and FaceTime—would only be available on certain iOS devices. Ars Technica noticed the 3D flyover feature of Apple's new Maps app would only be available to A5-powered iOS devices. In case you were wondering exactly which iOS 6 features will be compatible with your iOS device, Apple published a list (below) on its iOS 6 preview page that details all of the limitations for specific features:

-Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later. Cellular data charges may apply.

-Siri will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd generation) and requires Internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or all areas, and features may vary by area. Cellular data charges may apply.

-Shared Photo Streams requires iOS 6 on iPhone 4 or later or iPad 2 or later, or a Mac computer with OS X Mountain Lion. An up-to-date browser is required for accessing shared photo streams on the web.

-FaceTime over a cellular network requires iPhone 4S or iPad (3rd generation) with cellular data capability. Carrier data charges may apply. FaceTime is not available in all countries.

-VIP list and VIP and Flagged smart mailboxes will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later.

-Offline Reading List will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later.

-Made for iPhone hearing aids require iPhone 4S.

-Find My Friends and Find My iPhone enable you to locate iOS devices only when they are on and connected to a registered Wi-Fi network or have an active data plan. Not available in all areas.
