Download Absinthe 2.0.2

It was a coincidence that Apple released a new software update for iOS 5.1.1 immediately after the release of Absinthe tool. To some, it was a sudden shock as people thought if Apple has patched the jailbreak in such a short time. However, Apple did not patch the jailbreak method used is Absinthe and now Chronic Dev-Team has updated Absinthe to support the iPhone4 GSM iOS 5.1.1 build 9b208.

If you were having stockification failures on SAM on 5.1.1 it should be fixed now.

Download sn0wbreeze v2.9.4

What is New?

  • Added the 5.1.1/9B206 untether that was released with today's absinthe update.
  • Added 5.0/9B206f (Apple TV 2) support.
  • Minor UI changes (thanks @icj_!).
  • Bug Fixes.

  • iPhone 4 (GSM) & Apple's 5.1.1/9B208 Update:

This evening, Apple appears to have (surprisingly) released 5.1.1/9B208 for the iPhone 4 (GSM) exclusively. Although there isn't much of a difference it was enough to make the 9B206 untether payload for the iPhone 4 (GSM) invalidate on 9B208. Untilpod2g/planetbeing build an untether payload for this build, 9B208 support is not included. A small update will be pushed whenever this occurs. This doesn't mean the untether was patched though.

    A5(X) Support?:

As stated many times in the past, sn0wbreeze cannot be updated to work on A5(X) devices until a low level exploit in DFU or iBoot is found and made public. Therefore, A5(X) users will have to rely on using the lovelyabsinthe.

    A5(X) Baseband Preservation/Hacktivation?

For those running A5(X) devices and need to preserve your baseband, there is nothing you can do at the moment. For those wanting to hacktivate, the only advice I can give is to buy the carrier's SIM (the one its locked to obviously) on ebay. The SIM does not have to be active with the carrier to activate the phone.

Was just about to push sn0wbreeze 2.9.4 and Apple pushes 5.1.1 (9B208) for the iPhone 4 (GSM) only. I wonder what changed...

iOS 5.1.1 (9B208) Released For iPhone 4 GSM [Direct Download Link]

The weekend hasn't arrived quite yet, as Apple has quietly pushed out a revised build of iOS 5.1.1 for the GSM iPhone 4 (AT&T). The update (Build 9B208) is available now only for GSM iPhone 4 owners who have not yet updated to the 5.1.1. If you have a GSM iPhone 4 on 5.1.1 already, you won't be able to grab this second (seemingly identical) update.

Apple has re-released iOS builds in the past, but this time around there seems to be no known bug fixes or changes. It's also interesting that the update is only for GSM iPhone 4 owners. Some sort of changes must be included, but Apple has provided no documentation. There's a chance that updated builds for other devices could pop up, so we'll keep you posted.

If you so desire, you can grab the revised iOS 5.1.1 build for the GSM iPhone 4 by using this direct download link. The update can then be manually applied in iTunes.

Untether iOS 5.1.1 Using Dev Team’s Command Line Interface

Again, this is just an optional way of jailbreaking your device. If Chronic Dev's Absinthe 2.0 solution has worked for you, there is no need to use this one to jailbreak your device.

We have compiled a step-by-step guide on Windows PC to get you going. For those of you on Mac OS X can use the same command as given in Step 6 below on Terminal.

Make sure you follow each step religiously in order to achieve the desired result. First and foremost, ensure you have a compatible device:

    • iPhone 4S
    • iPhone 4
    • iPhone 3GS
    • iPad (3rd Gen)
    • iPad 2
    • iPad 1
    • iPod touch 3G/4G
    • Apple TV (2nd Gen)

Note: It's highly advised that you go ahead with the following steps on a fresh installation of iOS 5.1.1.

Step 1: Download the .zip containing the required files through this link. At 10MB in size, it shouldn't take too long, and once it's made its way to your hard drive, extract it to somewhere you'll remember. The folder should be named "cinject-0.5.3".

Step 2: Connect your iOS device to your computer via USB.

Step 3: Next, we're going to be opening a command prompt. For those unfamiliar, press Start, and search for "Run", or simply tap the Windows button and the letter "R" simultaneously on your keyboard.

Step 4: From the Run box, you'll need to type in cmd.exe, which will in turn open up a command prompt.

    Screenshot (11)

Step 5: Now you will need to point the command prompt in the direction of the folder you extracted in Step 1. So if, for example, you simply dropped it on your desktop as most people tend to with short-term files, type "cd Desktop/cinject-0.5.3".

    Screenshot (12)

Step 6: Now the preparation has been done, it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty. Type "cinject -Y payloads_rocky".

    Screenshot (13)

Step 7: At this point, you'll see a lot of stuff happening on your PC's screen, don't panic, and donot touch your device during the whole process. Your device will be going through a phase which will look like a restore process, that is completely normal.

    Screenshot (14)

    Screenshot (15)

Step 8: That's it, you're done, just tap the Cydia icon on the home screen, let the data reload, and jump into the jailbreak goodness!

Highlights of MuscleNerd’s ‘Evolution of The iPhone Baseband And Unlocks’ Presentation

MuscleNerd is one of the most prominent members of the jailbreak community, and his vast knowledge has helped the iPhone Dev Team continue to update and improve its Redsn0w utility in the progressive cat and mouse battle. Apart from jailbreaking, MuscleNerd and other Dev Team members continue to dabble in the unlocking game as well, and with the Cupertino's sought-after device mostly sold subsidized – i.e. locked under a contractual agreement with a carrier – there are plenty of iPhone users on the lookout for an unlock.

MuscleNerd – like most devs in and around the Cydia fray – does most of his communication via the wonderful world of Twitter, but in anticipation for the HITB Security Conference, or HITBSecConf, he has produced a pretty lengthy, detailed presentation on the history and evolution of baseband unlocks during the course of the last few years.

How to prepare for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak ?

How to prepare for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak ?

    • First Download last version of iTunes and download iOS 5.1.1 firmware for all devices you plan to jailbreak then save it in a place that you can easily identify later.
    • If you have a jailbroken device running iOS 5.0.1 or any firmware you have to cases
      • Case 1: to wait until the release of the upcoming iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.
      • Case 2: To restore your device and update it to iOS 5.1.1 but in this case you will lose the jailbreak but why restore ? Just to decrease bugs and get better results starting from stock.
    • If you recently purchased an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 with iOS 5.1 installed then go ahead and update to iOS 5.1.1.
    • If you have an iPad 3 don't think and update it to iOS 5.1.1 the upcoming iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak will be the first jailbreak for iPad 3.
    • For A4 devices its up to you to update to iOS 5.1.1 or wait until the Absinthe 2.0 official release i prefer the second one.

Note: its very important for the A4 device: (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation) to save their SHSH blobs, so they can downgrade to previous firmware.

    Why jailbreak ?

There are multiple reasons to jailbreak, including :

    • changing the iOS experience with powerful tweaks that can't ever exist on the AppStore : SBSettings, WinterBoard, IntelliScreenX, LockInfo, and lot of others...
    • playing retro games on console and arcade emulators.
    • having access to a unix shell in you pocket, and all the open source software that can run on a unix OS.
The jailbreak is not meant for (and we are totally against it) :
    • pirating AppStore applications

Also please don't pirate Cydia tweaks, there are people working hard on these, and the price is usually low. There's no reason to do that.

Some facts about the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak

@MuscleNerd wrote a quick sheet about the upcoming tools (link).

I won't rephrase him, so here are the contents of the file at the time of writing :

    * All info below is tentative and subject to last minute refinements
    * @pod2g's 5.1.1 jailbreak+untether is working out great.  All devices are covered except for AppleTV3,1, which currently has no path for jailbreaking.
     - the initial 5.1.1 plan used a kernel exploit from @westbaer which unfortunately precluded use in iPod3,1 and iPhone2,1
     - @planetbeing stepped up and provided a kernel exploit that covers both of those.  Those two JBers are the bomb!
    * The 5.1.1 A5 JB is very similar to the A5 5.0.1 JB.  @pimskeks has done a tremendous job supporting both 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 in absinthe
    * Similar to 5.0.1, there will also be a 5.1.1 CLI "cinject" binary and redsn0w version of the 5.1.1 JB+untether.  Absinthe, cinject, and redsn0w will all provide the same JB in different fashions.
     - timing is indeterminate.  Plans are for this week, but a number of factors can influence that.
    * For those wishing to donate, we've set up a new 5.1.1 paypal URL:  paypal
    * Please don't pirate AppStore apps (seriously, please do not).

5.1.x untethered jailbreak FAQ from Pod2g

I receive lots of questions either by email or twitter about the 5.1.x untethered jailbreak.

    Here are some answers :

    • The poll about releasing now or waiting for 6.0 ended with a 64% / 33% to release ASAP. Where is the link ? ETA ? How much % done ? etc.

As I said earlier in twitter, there's still a lot to do to have a user friendly and well tested tool to install the jailbreak on end users devices. Expect a release in a couple of weeks.
    • Will it be compatible with my <any random iOS device> ?

It will be compatible with any device running iOS 5.1.1 except iPod 3G, iPhone 3Gs and ATV3 (right now, may change in a near future, nobody knows).
    • Why is it so slow to release now that the iPad 3,1 has been demoed ?

There are 16 different devices out there to work on and to test. It takes time.
    • May I be a beta tester ?

No, sorry. Only really trusted people (that can be counted on one hand) could have access to the jailbreak. I don't want any leak to happen.
    • What if I offer you 1,000,000$ ?

      That doesn't change a thing.

    Be patient, it's gonna happen.

    See you my friends.

Seas0nPass currently supports a TETHERED jailbreak of the 2nd gen Apple TV running the latest 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1 - 9B206f) software that was released on May 10th, 2012.

Older Apple TV versions can be used with Seas0nPass if you have saved firmware signatures.

The 3rd gen Apple TV is not yet supported.

    Troubleshooting tips

    Pre-launch checklist

    1. Latest version of iTunes.
    2. Latest version of Seas0nPass (use links above).
    3. micro USB cable.
    4. Disconnect any iPods, iPhones, and iPads from your computer.

Using Seas0nPass to jailbreak the Apple TV

Step 1: Unzip the 'Seas0nPass.zip' file and launch Seas0nPass.

    SP-launch.jpg

Step 2: Select the 'Create IPSW' button to start the jailbreak process.

Step 3: The latest Apple TV software will be downloaded and used to create a custom 'jailbroken' software file.

    SP-create.jpg

Step 4: When prompted, connect your Apple TV to your Mac/PC using a micro-USB cable (leave power cable disconnected).

Once the light on the front of the Apple TV begins to flash rapidly, point the remote at the Apple TV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Note: This step will require the silver (aluminum) Apple TV remote that was included with the ATV2. The older, white (plastic) remotes will not work.

    SP-restore1.jpg

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.

     SP-itunes.jpg

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete - your Apple TV is now jailbroken!

Note: To confirm the jailbreak was successful a (temporary) red FC logo will appear in place of the Settings icon - as shown below.

Using Seas0nPass for a 'tethered boot'

Some Apple TV software versions require a tethered boot. This means the Apple TV must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Note 2: The Apple TV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Open Seas0nPass and select the 'Boot Tethered' option.

    SP-main2.jpg

Step 2: When prompted, connect the Apple TV to your computer via USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power cable. Once both are connected hold both the 'MENU' and 'PLAY/PAUSE' buttons for 7 seven seconds.

    SP-tetherprompt.jpg

Step 3: Seas0nPass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.

Note: Timing is key. Once the you receive the success message shown below, the USB cable should be removed and HDMI cable connected before the light on the front of the Apple TV stops flashing. (Don't worry there is ample to do this, so you don't need Superman speed).

Lost your jailbreak on an A5 device? redsn0w 0.9.11b1 can now downgrade iPad2/3 and 4S

    5x redux

    What's old is new again!

Jailbreakers with devices that pre-date the iPad2 will always be able to downgrade (with SHSH blobs) to previous firmware versions due to geohot's limera1n exploit, which allows us to bypass the restrictions that Apple places on restores.  But until now, that ability has been limited to those older devices (if you have an older device and don't know how to do that, check the popular tutorial sites or ask in the comments below).

Starting with redsn0w version 0.9.11b1, those with newer devices (iPad2, iPad3, and iPhone4S) can join the downgrade fun too!  In a radical departure from previous versions of redsn0w, it now directly supports restoring IPSWs to your device.  The first use of this new feature implements a hack that allows A5 downgrades without a bootrom-level exploit.

    Some important points:

    • The new feature is at Extras->Even More->Restore
    • You cannot downgrade without the personalized SHSH blobs for your device at that lower firmware.  You need to have fetched those blobs while the signing window was open, using either Cydia's built-in TSS@Home feature, or with TinyUmbrella.  The new Restore screen of redsn0w lets you choose either the remote blobs or local ones (for the earlier firmware).  If you don't know where TinyUmbrella put your blobs, TinyUmbrella has a button that will show you (copy them out of that folder and feed them to redsn0w).
    • The A5 downgrade method actually updates to the latest firmware before downgrading to the earlier one. This process updates your baseband to whatever is newest.  DO NOT USE THIS METHOD IF YOU RELY ON UNOFFICIAL UNLOCKS of your iPhone4S.  Those who used the temporary SAM technique to unlock their iPhones to specific SIMs shouldn't be affected by this baseband update.
    • This method can be fixed by Apple with a firmware update.  It's a (pleasant) mystery why they haven't fixed it yet, because reverse-engineering of the restore ramdisk indicates they do know about it.  It's possibly too niche to bother to fix right now.
    • The least-tested devices with this method are the iPad2,3 and iPad3,2 (because we don't have those models).  If you do and you feel like experimenting, please let us know how it turns out in the comment section below!
    • This update involves a bunch of new redsn0w code.  We recommend sticking to the previous version 0.9.10b8b unless you're specifically using this new feature, until all the bugs are worked out!  (Note: If redsn0w gets stuck at the "Waiting for device" stage for more than 30 seconds, you've hit a pesky GUI bug…that will be fixed in an upcoming version!)

Of course all eyes are on @pod2g for his upcoming 5.1 untethered jailbreak.  Watch his blog or twitter feed for the latest updates about that, but in the meantime if you accidentally updated your jailbroken A5 device to something later than 5.0.1, feel free to try this new A5 firmware downgrade feature of redsn0w!

Update #1: We accidentally left out one of the two flavors ("9A406") of 5.0.1 for iPhone4S.  It'll be in the next update, but in the meantime check if Cydia or TU saved your blobs for the other 5.0.1 for iPhone4S ("9A405").
