Jailbreakers & unlockers Stay away from iOS 5.1

OK, the rumor about iOS 5.1′s release has been going around for a few weeks now but no tech blogsspecifically says the do's and don't for jailbreakers and unlockers.

iPhone 4S

  • Do not update to iOS 5.1 or else your baseband will be updated and you won't be able to unlock it with Gevey Ultra S, possibly for a very long time!
  • If you're already running a jailbroken iOS 5.0.1, stay that way and wait until the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 becomes available.
  • If you haven't jailbroken your iPhone, do it now with Absinthe for untethered jailbreak.
  • Current baseband that can't be unlocked: none.
  • Latest baseband version expected: 1.5.04.

iPhone 4

  • If you have baseband 1.59.00, 2.10.04, 3.10.01 or 4.10.01, do not update to iOS 5.1 or else it will be updated to a version that can't be unlocked.
  • Save your SHSH with TinyUmbrellaiFaith or on Cydia.
  • Jailbreak with the latest redsn0w for untethered jailbreak.
  • Current baseband that can't be unlocked: 4.11.08. The only available solution is here.
  • Latest baseband version expected: 4.12.01.
iPhone 3GS
  • If you have baseband 5.13.04 or below, do not update to iOS 5.1 or else it will be updated to a version that can't be unlocked.
  • Save your SHSH with TinyUmbrellaiFaith or on Cydia.
  • Jailbreak with the latest redsn0w for untethered jailbreak.
  • Current baseband that can't be unlocked: 5.14.02, 5.15.04, 5.16.02 and 5.16.05 (only possible to flash with iPad baseband 6.15.00 if your iPhone is not produced after week 28 of year 2011).
  • Latest baseband version expected: 5.16.05 (no change from iOS 5.0.1).

In short, if you see the update notification in iTunes or on your Settings app on your iPhone…

Just hit Cancel and wait until proper jailbreaking or unlocking tools have been developed. Alternatively, you can try the following, tipped by @Piksou0 (recommended for advanced users only. Thanks @Piksou0!):

There is solution to prevent iPhone update to new iOS version via iTunes , the solution is to install (Cydia) tweak called "Recovery Guard " from this source "repo.pushfix.info" , this tweak will not allow iTunes to put iPhone into recovery mode, the only solution to update firmware when you install this tweak is to put iPhone into dfu mode (no accidental update from iTunes)

It doesn't hurt to wait. It's gonna hurt more if you lose your untethered jailbreak or unlock!
