iPad 2 Teardown

After months of rumors and speculations, Apple’s iPad 2 has finally arrived.
Folks at iFixit, the teardown experts are at it again, they’ve disassembled iPad 2, which has revealed some interesting details about the internals of iPad 2 such as RAM etc.
iFixit teardown reveals that iPad 2 comes with 512MB RAM just like iPhone 4:
Apple 1GHz A5 dual-core Processor with a 200MHz bus and 512 MB of RAM.
iPad 2 comes with a 3.8V, 25 watt-hour unit, which is just slightly more than the 24.8 watt-hour unit used in iPad 1.
Apple has managed to reduce the thickness of iPad 2 by using thinner glass and LCD. Here is a quick look at the comparison to get an idea:
iPad 1:       lcd = 3.2 mm    glass = .85 mm iPad 2:       lcd = 2.4 mm    glass = .62 mm
iFixit has raised concerns over the thickness of the glass and LCD screen.
The thickness of these components -- especially that of the glass -- could drastically reduce the durability of the device, especially the glass' resistance to shattering.
iFixit believe that the new 1GHz dual-core A5 chip is made by Samsung.
The A5 processor has manufacture dates of late January and mid-February 2011. Production was clearly ramping up through the last minute. It looks like the A5 processor is the APL0498, replacing the A4/APL0398 seen in the iPad 1 and iPhones.
It will be interesting to find out the internals of the A5 chip, as we expect it to be used in iPhone 5 and iOS 4.3 has already more evidence of such a possibility.
